What am I doing? Towards 2030

Son passati quasi cinque anni dall’adozione da parte delle Nazioni Unite dell’Agenda 2030. Allora facevo ufficialmente parte degli incaricati a diffonderne il messaggio. Alcune cose sono cambiate nella mia vita, ma l’adesione a questi principi resta per me sempre la stessa. Torino è la mia città, l’arte è uno dei miei interessi e gli obiettivi delle Nazioni Unite sono stati da sempre parte del mio lavoro. Mi è sembrato che valesse la pena condividere una mia personale rivisitazione del progetto originale di Lavazza, una storica azienda della città, che ha promosso la realizzazione di 18 grandi murales che rappresentano i 17 Obiettivi dell’Agenda 2030 (più uno nuovo).

Almost five years have passed since the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda. At that time I was officially part of those in charge of spreading the message. Several things have changed in my life, but adherence to these principles remains the same for me.
Turin is my city, art is one of my interests and the objectives of the United Nations have always been part of my job. I am sharing here my personal review of the interesting project of Lavazza, a historic Turin company, which promoted the creation of 18 large murals representing the 17 Goals of the 2030 Agenda (plus a new one).

Amplificare, diffondere e far conoscere il messaggio dell’Agenda 2030
L’opera si intitola “Scultura bronzea storia e tradizione” ed è di Zach, Ernest Zacharevic, lituano, che vive in Malesia dove è noto come il Banksy della Malesia.
Questo nuovo obiettivo è stato proposto da Lavazza – che ha promosso la realizzazione di questo e degli altri 17 murales sparsi sui muri di Torino – e si propone di incoraggiare le persone a fermarsi e pensare cosa significhi per loro il traguardo 2030.
Zach ha scelto la statua equestre, esempio tradizionale di scultura torinese, affiancata dalla nuova generazione, rappresentata dal ragazzino con il ramoscello simbolo di sviluppo.

Spreading awareness on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda
The work is titled “Bronze sculpture, history and tradition” and is by Zach, Ernest Zacharevic, a Lithuanian artist, who lives in Malaysia where he is known as the Banksy of Malaysia.
This new goal was proposed by Lavazza – which promoted the realization of this and of the other 17 murals scattered on the walls of Turin. It aims at encouraging people to stop and think what the 2030 goal means for them.
Zach has chosen the equestrian statue, a traditional example of Turin sculpture, combined with the new generation, represented by the boy with the twig, symbol of development.

Sconfiggere la povertà
Porre fine ad ogni forma di povertà nel mondo è il tema assegnato a Zed1.
Fiorentino di profilo internazionale, è attivo come writer fin dagli anni ‘90.
“È dal terreno fertile illuminato dal sole e dalle azioni virtuose che prende vita la vera storia” ci dice la sua opera, realizzata sul muro di una scuola affacciata sul Po.

No poverty
Ending all forms of poverty in the world is the theme assigned to the artist known as Zed1.
Florentine with an international profile, he has been active as a writer since the 90s.
“It is from the fertile soil illuminated by the sun and by virtuous actions that the true story comes to life” tells us his work, painted on the wall of a school overlooking the Po river.

Sconfiggere la fame
Il secondo Obiettivo Sostenibile di Sviluppo dell’Agenda 2030 si propone di porre fine alla fame, raggiungere la sicurezza alimentare, migliorare la nutrizione e promuovere un’agricoltura sostenibile.
Truly Urban Artists collettivo nato nel 2003, composto da tre writers: Mauro149, Rems182, Ninja1, ha realizzato l’opera “Cultus” con un linguaggio di astrazione geometrica: il grande tondo rappresenta un campo, la forma esagonale è il seme.

Zero Hunger
The second Sustainable Development Objective of the 2030 Agenda aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. The Collective “Truly Urban Artists”  born in 2003, composed of three artists: Mauro149, Rems182, Ninja1, created a work called “Cultus” using geometric abstraction: the large round represents a field, the hexagonal shape is the seed.

Salute e benessere per tutti
Assicurare la salute e il benessere per tutti e per tutte le età è quanto si propone il terzo Obiettivo Sostenibile di Sviluppo da raggiungere entro il 2030.
Luis Gomez Deteran, Venezuelano, romano di adozione ha realizzato “Come le più belle cose” su un muro di Via Berthollet. Il titolo è ispirato alla Canzone di Marinella di Fabrizio De André. Le rose bianche sono un simbolo di nascita e le tre fasi della loro crescita rappresentano le diverse età della vita umana.

Good Health and Well-being
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages is what the third Sustainable Development Goal proposes to be achieved by 2030.
Luis Gomez Deteran, Venezuelan, now Roman by adoption, has created “Like the most beautiful things” on a wall of Via Berthollet.  The title is inspired by Fabrizio De André’s Marinella Song.  White roses are a symbol of birth and the three stages of their growth represent the different ages of human life.

Fornire un’educazione di qualità, equa ed inclusiva e opportunità di apprendimento per tutti è quanto si propone l’Obiettivo 4.
Vesod, artista torinese, ha realizzato “4Education: The Perfect Circle” su di un muro del Campus universitario Einaudi: una donna intenta allo studio all’interno di una biblioteca che si fonde con il paesaggio naturale composto da alberi.

Quality Education
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all is what is promoted by Goal 4.
Vesod, an artist from Turin, created “4Education: The Perfect Circle” on a wall of the Einaudi university campus: a woman intent on studying inside a library that blends into a natural landscape made up of trees.

Parità di genere
Il gigantesco murale che vuole incoraggiare a raggiungere l’uguaglianza di genere ed emancipare tutte le donne e le ragazze si trova in Corso Belgio 79 a Torino.
Camilla Falsini , illustratrice e street artist romana vi ha dipinto “La Città delle Dame”, un affresco raffigurante Christine de Pizan, prima scrittrice donna di professione (1364), volendo sottolineare il valore dell’educazione e della cultura per realizzare l’uguaglianza di genere.

Gender equality
The gigantic mural aiming at encouraging to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls is found at Corso Belgio 79 in Turin.
Camilla Falsini, Roman illustrator and street artist painted “La Città delle Dame”, a fresco depicting Christine de Pizan, known as the first professional woman writer (1364), wishing to underline the value of education and culture to achieve gender equality.

Acqua pulita e servizi igienico-sanitari

Il mio tour attraverso gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile – ed i murales che li rappresentano – continua al Parco del Valentino, dove vediamo il murale che rappresenta l’obiettivo 6: “Acqua pulita e servizi igienico-sanitari “ in Viale Virgilio.
Garantire a tutti la disponibilità e la gestione sostenibile dell’acqua e delle strutture igienico-sanitarie è il tema assegnato a Hula, surfista alle Hawaii, artista a NYC e Los Angeles, che considera l’oceano una seconda casa.
La sua opera “Lau Hala” rappresenta una figura che riporta alcuni simboli polinesiani tradizionali, principio di unità. Le gocce blu, idea di lacrime, simboleggiano l’acqua pulita.

Clean water and sanitation
My tour through the Sustainable Development Goals – and the murals that represent them – continues at Valentino Park, where we can see the mural representing Goal 6: “Clean water and sanitation” in Viale Virgilio.
Guaranteeing everyone availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation is the theme assigned to Hula, a surfer in Hawaii, an artist in NYC and Los Angeles, who considers the ocean a second home.
His work “Lau Hala” represents a figure that shows some traditional Polynesian symbols, the principle of unity.  The blue drops, like an idea of ​​tears, symbolize clean water.

Energia pulita ed accessibile
Assicurare a tutti l’accesso a sistemi di energia economici, affidabili, sostenibili e moderni potrebbe essere la chiave per riprenderci un mondo pulito.
Gerada, artista cubano-americano, vive tra NYC e Barcellona ha dipinto una ragazza che rilascia energia pulita, incitando gli osservatori ad agire ora.

Affordable and Clean Energy
Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy systems for all could be the key to living in a clean world.
Cuban-American artist Gerada, living between NYC and Barcelona, painted a girl who releases clean energy, prompting observers to act now.

Lavoro dignitoso e crescita economica
Son già passati vent’anni da quando Juan Somavia, allora direttore generale dell’ILO, affermava che la chiave per risolvere i problemi di esclusione sociale e povertà è l’occupazione.
Incentivare una crescita economica duratura, inclusiva e sostenibile, un’occupazione piena e produttiva ed un lavoro dignitoso per tutti continua ad essere uno dei più importanti obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile.
Oko, street artist croata, che lavora tra Londra e Zagabria ha dipinto “Solitary Worker”. In molte culture il fenicottero è messaggero di valori positivi come l’equilibrio, la cura, la cooperazione, imprescindibili per ottenere crescita economica e dignità nel lavoro.

Decent Work and Economic Growth
Twenty years have passed already, since Juan Somavia, the ILO Director-General at that time, affirmed that the key to solving problems of social exclusion and poverty is employment.
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all remains one of the most important sustainable development objectives.
Croatian street artist Oko, who works between London and Zagreb, painted “Solitary Worker”. In many cultures, the flamingo is a messenger of positive values ​​such as balance, care, cooperation, all essential elements for obtaining economic growth and dignity at work.

Imprese, innovazione e infrastrutture
Girare l’angolo di Via Nizza 199 (virtualmente, per ora) e scoprire il murale di Kash (Dzmitryi Kashtalyan) intitolato  “Progressive Technology in Your Hands”. Rappresenta una volpe antropomorfa che integra progresso tecnologico e poetica tradizionale e vuole promuovere l’obiettivo 9 “Imprese, innovazione e infrastrutture”.
Costruire un’infrastruttura resiliente e promuovere l’innovazione ed una industrializzazione equa, responsabile e sostenibile è impegnativo, ma non impossibile.
L’autore di questo murale, Kash, street artist ed illustratore, è bielorusso e vive a Minsk.

Industry, innovation and infrastructure
Turning the corner of Via Nizza 199 and discovering the mural painted by Kash (Dzmitryi Kashtalyan) entitled Progressive Technology in Your Hands. It represents an anthropomorphic fox that integrates technological progress and poetic traditions and aims at promoting Goal 9 “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”.
Building a resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation is challenging, but not impossible.
The author of this mural, Kash, street artist and illustrator, is Belarusian and lives in Minsk.

Ridurre le diseguaglianze
Armonia e serenità. Ridurre l’ineguaglianza all’interno di e fra le nazioni è quanto afferma l’Obiettivo 10 dell’Agenda 2030 per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile delle Nazioni Unite.
In Via Giovanni Plana 10 a Torino, Fabio Petani , urban artist piemontese, che fa parte dell’associazione Il Cerchio e Le Gocce, ha dipinto “Amylum, Triticum & Oryza Sativa” per rappresentare armonia e serenità.
Grano e riso, paesaggio fluviale ed elementi geometrici per dire che la riduzione delle diseguaglianze passa per un accesso uguale alle risorse.

Reducing inequality
Harmony and serenity. Reducing inequality within and among nations is what affirms Goal 10 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In Via Giovanni Plana 10 in Turin, Fabio Petani, a Piedmontese urban artist, who is part of the association Il Cerchio e Le Gocce, painted “Amylum, Triticum & Oryza Sativa” to represent harmony and serenity.
Wheat and rice, river landscape and geometric elements are intertwined to say that reduction of inequalities passes through equal access to resources.

Città e comunità sostenibili
Rendere le città, le comunità e gli insediamenti umani inclusivi, sicuri, duraturi e sostenibili, non è forse una delle necessità che stiamo sperimentando in questo momento?
L’Obiettivo 11 Città e comunità sostenibili rappresentato in Corso Regina Margherita 68 a Torino dall’opera “Cernunnos” ci invita a pensare che la città ideale (quella dipinta più in alto) non può esistere se non sostenibile, in armonia con il ciclo della natura.
Ufo, artista novarese, realizza scenografie teatrali e opere allegoriche come questa, dove il cervo è la figura mitologica di Cernunnos.

Sustainable cities and communities
Making cities, communities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, isn’t it one of the needs we are badly experiencing right now?
Objective 11 Sustainable cities and communities represented in Corso Regina Margherita 68 in Turin by the work Cernunnos invites us to think that the ideal city (the one painted over the top) cannot exist if not sustainable, in harmony with the cycle of nature.
Ufo, an artist from Novara, creates theatrical sets and allegorical works like the one portrayed on this wall, where the deer is the mythological figure of Cernunnos.

Consumo e produzione responsabili
Un aeroplanino di carta che prende fuoco rappresenta l’uso e l’abuso delle materie prime, suggerendoci di garantire modelli sostenibili di produzione e di consumo.
Nevercrew (Christian Rebecchi e Pablo Togni), artisti svizzeri ticinesi, hanno realizzato la loro opera chiamata “Fade” in Via Mantova 29 a Torino.

Responsible consumption and production
A paper airplane catching fire represents the use and abuse of primary resources, suggesting that we try and guarantee sustainable production and consumption models.
Nevercrew (Christian Rebecchi and Pablo Togni), Swiss artists from Ticino, created their work called “Fade” in Via Mantova 29 in Turin.

Lotta contro il cambiamento climatico
Di una bellezza disarmante, questa miriade di farfalle, cadute per l’inquinamento ed il cambiamento climatico, guarda dal muro di Via Parma 24 a Torino l’antistante sede della Lavazza, l’azienda che voluto e promosso l’intera iniziativa Towards2030 per diffondere attraverso la street-art gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell’Agenda 2030 delle Nazioni Unite.
L’obiettivo 13 Lotta contro il cambiamento climatico si propone di promuovere azioni a tutti i livelli per combattere il cambiamento del clima.
Mantra, street artist francese ed internazionale che si rifà ai trompe l’oeil ha qui dipinto “The Ode of Collapse”.

Fight against climate change
Of a heartbreaking beauty, this myriad of butterflies, fallen due to pollution and climate change, looks from the wall of Via Parma 24 in Turin the Lavazza headquarters, the company that wanted and promoted the whole Towards2030 initiative to disseminatethrough street art the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Objective 13 Fight against climate change aims to promote action at all levels to combat climate change.

Vita sott’acqua
Conservare e utilizzare in modo durevole gli oceani, i mari e le risorse marine per uno sviluppo sostenibileiniziano ad essere parte di una consapevolezza comune.
Qui, in Corso Regina Margherita a Torino, Mrfijodor, originario di Imperia e cofondatore dell’associazione “Il Cerchio e Le Gocce” ha creato “The Rubbish Whale” per promuovere l’obiettivo 14 “Vita sotto l’acqua”. Ispirato da elementi legati al suo territorio (Imperia è legata all’inventore della plastica, la Liguria ospita il Santuario dei Cetacei) crea un grande capodoglio fatto di spazzatura di plastica.

Life Below Water
Conserving and responsibly using the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development are recently starting to be part of a common awareness. Here, in Corso Regina Margherita in Turin, Mrfijodor, originally from Imperia and co-founder of the association “Il Cerchio e Le Gocce” created “The Rubbish Whale” to promote SDG 14 “Life below water“.Inspired by elements related to his territory (Imperia has links with the invention of plastic, Liguria is home to the Cetacean Sanctuary) the artist creates a large sperm whale made of plastic trash.

Vita sulla terra
“La Natura è un Insieme Vivente”
È il titolo del murale di Corso Palermo 40 a Torino. Lo stiamo capendo, forse, in questi giorni in cui ci accorgiamo che ognuno di noi è legato a tutti quelli che ci circondano. L’Obiettivo 15 “Vita sulla terra” si propone di proteggere, ripristinare e favorire un uso sostenibile dell’ecosistema terrestre.
Questo lavoro è di Hitnes, muralista e illustratore romano che lavora in tutto il mondo.

Life on Land
“Nature is a Living Complex”. 
It is the title of the mural at Corso Palermo 40 in Turin.  We start to understand it, may be, in these days when we realize that each of us is linked by nature to everyone else around us.
Goal 15 “Life on Earth” propose to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of the terrestrial ecosystem, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss. 
This work is by Hitnes, a muralist and Roman illustrator who works all over the world.

Pace e Giustizia
Stiamo vivendo una guerra sanitaria, ma possiamo davvero usare questo tempo sospeso per pensare a costruire società pacifiche e inclusive per uno sviluppo sostenibile.
È quanto si prefigge l’obiettivo 16.
In Corso Moncalieri 61 a Torino, Louis Masai, artista internazionale che usa la pittura per per sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sugli effetti del cambiamento climatico ha creato “Swimming Towards a New Existence”. Ci rimarranno solo i giocattoli, come in questo caso un patchwork, al posto degli animali.
“Il commercio illegale di avorio finanzia le guerre” dice un cartiglio del murale.

Peace and Justice
We are at war, a war for health, but we can really use this suspended time to think about building peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.
This is what Goal 16 sets itself: to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
In Corso Moncalieri 61 in Turin, Louis Masai, an international artist who uses painting to raise public awareness on the effects of climate change, created “Swimming Towards a New Existence“. We will only have toys, like a patchwork in this case, instead of real wild animals.
“Illegal ivory trade finances wars,” says a sign on the mural.

Partnership globale
Anche il sistema mondiale è messo alla prova, solo insieme possiamo superare questo momento. Lo dice anche l’Obiettivo 17.
Rafforzare i mezzi di attuazione e rinnovare il partenariato mondiale per lo sviluppo sostenibile.
Monkeys Evolution, associazione fondata da quattro writers a Torino, si occupa di campagne di comunicazione sociale.
“Intrecci” è in Corso Giulio Cesare 20 a Torino. Trama e ordito, l’intrecciarsi di fili insieme formano il tessuto sociale. A volte si creano dei nodi, dei problemi, ma la visione globale è vincente.

Global partnership
The whole world system is being tested, only together can we overcome this moment.
Goal 17 also says so: to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
Monkeys Evolution, an association founded by four writers in Turin, deals with social communication campaigns.
“Intrecci” is in Corso Giulio Cesare 20 in Turin. Weft and warp, threads intertwining together form the social fabric. Sometimes knots are created, problems arise, but the global vision is a winning one.
